The Mid-Century Modern program explores the American Modernist movement in saxophone music, highlighting composers’ rejection of tradition and emphasis on individuality. Through innovative techniques such as serialism and dissonance, artists like Creston, Heiden, Crawford, Moore, and Husa aimed to capture the dynamic and multifaceted nature of modern life, offering a profound reflection on the human condition.

Stetson University faculty oboist, Dione Chandler and I will perform Gregory Wanamaker’s Double Cadenza for oboe and tenor saxophone. The piece parodies the virtuosity and improvisitory nature of a typical cadenza. It is humerous and exciting making it a lot of fun for us to play.

Stetson’s Saxophone Workshop is an intense, weeklong event focusing on fundamental principles of saxophone performance, including an emphasis on specialized classes in Playing Techniques, Jazz, Chamber and FBA All-State audition music.

In celebration of Women’s History Month I performed Incandesence by Ida Gotkovsky with Kristie Born. Ida Gotkovsky is a French composer and pianist of Russian descent. She has written extensively for various instrumental ensembles and is particularly known for her compositions for wind instruments.

I performed works by composers from under-represented groups for tenor saxophone. This was my first recital entirely on tenor saxophone, which came about because I bought a new one! (YTS-875EX Custom, if you must know.)

In celebration of Black History Month I performed Samuel Coleridge Taylor’s Romance in G Major with Kristie Born. The Romance in G Major was first published in 1900, when Samuel was 25 years old, as a piece for violin and orchestra.
